Maryland is currently experiencing measles outbreaks, with health officials declaring the situation in St. Mary's, Carroll, and Cecil counties. Fourteen new cases have been confirmed among unvaccinated residents in these areas.
The Maryland Department of Health reported that most new cases are within household contacts, indicating a low risk of widespread community transmission. The state has recorded 31 confirmed measles cases this year, with the majority occurring since mid-July 2026.
Health officials are collaborating with local departments to encourage vaccination. Dr. Meena Seshamani, Maryland Department of Health Secretary, stressed that vaccinated individuals face a low risk of contracting measles. She urged residents to check their vaccination status and get immunized to protect vulnerable populations.
Guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the MMR vaccine for children at 12-15 months and again at 4-6 years. Infants 6-11 months may receive an early dose if traveling to outbreak areas. Adults are advised to have at least one MMR dose.
