Maryland Heat Deaths Reach Record High This Summer

Maryland health officials have recorded a staggering 59 heat-related deaths this summer, marking the highest toll since 2012. These fatalities occurred between May and August 29, 2026. The current death count surpasses previous years, with 34 deaths in 2025 and 27 in 2024.
The state's Weather-Related Illness Data Dashboard also indicates a significant number of heat-related illnesses. Emergency department visits and urgent care center visits for these conditions totaled 1,484. Furthermore, 1,526 individuals required emergency medical services due to heat-related issues.
Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani emphasized preventative measures, urging residents to utilize cooling centers and check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Warning signs of heat-related illness include muscle pain, headache, vomiting, weakness, nausea, disorientation, and rapid breathing.
