State health officials are issuing urgent warnings to Marylanders to protect themselves from rising summer temperatures, especially after the first heat-related fatality of the season was confirmed. An elderly man in Calvert County, aged between 70-80, died due to heat-related illness, marking a somber start to the summer.
As of May 23, the state has recorded 145 emergency room visits for heat-related illnesses since the season began on May 3. This follows a severe 2025 season that saw 36 deaths and nearly 1,700 ER visits. Health officials recommend staying hydrated, seeking shade, wearing light clothing, and scheduling outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day.
Symptoms of heat-related illness, such as disorientation, nausea, and rapid shallow breathing, require immediate medical attention. Officials also stressed the critical danger of leaving children and pets in vehicles, where temperatures can rapidly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
