Manitoba Doctor Growth Slows Amid Regional Decline
10 Sep
Summary
- Manitoba added 196 physicians between April 2025 and April 2026.
- Western Manitoba experienced a net loss of eight physicians.
- 158 doctors left the province last year, a significant increase.
Manitoba experienced a net increase of 196 physicians from April 30, 2025, to April 30, 2026, with the total number of doctors rising to 3,694. This marks a continued trend of growth, surpassing previous years' gains.
Despite the overall provincial increase, western Manitoba saw a net loss of eight physicians during the same period. The number of family physicians grew by 15% over two years, while other specialists saw about half that rate of increase.
Last year, 158 physicians left Manitoba, the highest figure since 2022-23, indicating a critical need for physician retention. This represents a jump from previous years.
New physician growth in Manitoba is increasingly reliant on internationally trained doctors, as the number of graduates from Manitoba medical schools is lower than in prior years. Approximately 60% of newly registered physicians in the province completed medical school outside of Canada.
