A new initiative called Ikiskawasoot, translating to 'She Carries Life,' has been launched in Thompson, Manitoba. This program aims to provide essential support for expectant mothers from northern First Nations who travel to the city for childbirth.
Overseen by Wiijii'idiwag Ikwewag and several health organizations, the program provides designated birth helpers. These individuals offer non-medical assistance, helping mothers navigate the healthcare system, overcome cultural and language barriers, and maintain a connection to their communities. The helpers also provide pre- and postpartum support, including assistance with appointments and traditional teachings.
This program seeks to address the unique challenges faced by Indigenous mothers, who often experience isolation and poorer birth outcomes when relocating for delivery. By offering culturally rooted support, Ikiskawasoot intends to bridge gaps in care and advocate for families. The initiative is currently operating as a research project due to a lack of dedicated funding for such services in Manitoba.
