5 Jun
Summary
- Man received seven years of unwarranted medical care.
- Initial diagnosis of terminal blood cancer was incorrect.
- Hospital trust apologized for severe distress caused.

Simon Pearson, a 41-year-old from Tamworth, has spoken out after enduring seven years of unnecessary medical treatment following an incorrect diagnosis of a terminal blood cancer. He was initially diagnosed with polycythaemia vera in November 2017 and subsequently misdiagnosed with haemochromatosis, leading to 42 inappropriate blood removal procedures. Pearson lived in constant fear, believing his condition was fatal and could be passed to his children.
It was only in June 2025 that a nurse's concern during a routine appointment led to further tests, revealing he did not have any of the diagnosed conditions. The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust has apologized for the substandard care that caused significant distress. Mr. Pearson is now pursuing legal action for medical negligence, sharing his story to encourage others to question diagnoses if they feel something is wrong, despite the NHS being a valued institution.
