Leg Stiffness Hid Devastating MND Diagnosis
6 Mar
Summary
- Man ignored leg stiffness, mistaking it for aging, then diagnosed with MND.
- MND diagnosis in June 2025 profoundly impacted the man and his wife.
- The couple now raises awareness and funds for MND charities.

Andrew Chadwick, 53, initially overlooked symptoms like leg stiffness and sudden falls, attributing them to the natural aging process. These dismissed signs led to serious incidents, including a fall that cracked a rib.
Referred to the hospital urgently by his physiotherapist, Mr. Chadwick underwent two weeks of tests before receiving a diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND) in June 2025. This neurodegenerative condition attacks nerves controlling voluntary muscle movement, causing progressive weakness.
MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK, typically over 50. Symptoms include muscle stiffness, walking difficulties, and breathing or eating problems. Currently, there is no cure, but treatments focus on symptom management and quality of life.
