A 34-year-old man from Essex, Liam Jefferies, has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), a rare and life-shortening neurological condition. His symptoms began subtly in May 2025 with a tingling and mild weakness in his feet, which he initially dismissed.
However, the symptoms rapidly progressed, affecting his legs and then his arms, significantly impacting his mobility and daily life. After a grueling 10-month diagnostic period, doctors confirmed the MND diagnosis in March 2026, ruling out other treatable conditions like MMN.
While a drug called Riluzole was prescribed to slow the disease's progression, Liam experienced severe side effects. This medication offers a limited extension of lifespan, estimated at three to six months.
Despite the challenges, Liam continues to work from home, finding it a valuable distraction. He is also part of an MND support group, though he is notably younger than most members and has experienced faster progression.
Supported by his girlfriend Kate, the NHS, and MND charities, Liam has access to necessary equipment like a wheelchair. The couple recently took a cruise through the Norwegian Fjords, a testament to their determination to live life fully.
Friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign, raising over £9,000 towards a £10,000 goal to help Liam and Kate maintain their quality of life. Liam has openly shared his diagnosis, receiving significant support from his community.
