Man Critical After Eating Toxic Monkshood
30 Mar
Summary
- A man in his 50s is in critical condition after consuming monkshood.
- He mistook the toxic plant for edible wind flower.
- This is the first suspected monkshood poisoning in Aomori since 2006.

A man in his 50s residing in Higashitsugaru county, Aomori Prefecture, is currently in critical condition due to suspected food poisoning from consuming monkshood. The individual reported feeling unwell on March 25 and was subsequently hospitalized. He had apparently eaten what he believed to be wind flower from his home.
Investigations by the prefectural government confirmed that the wild vegetation at his residence was largely monkshood. Analysis of his gastric fluid revealed the presence of aconitine, a potent toxin found in the plant. He is currently unconscious, suffering from arrhythmia and respiratory failure.
This event represents the first reported instance of food poisoning suspected to be caused by monkshood in Aomori Prefecture since 2006. Health officials are emphasizing the dangers, noting the difficulty in differentiating toxic wild plants, particularly monkshood from wind flower prior to blooming. They strongly advise against making assumptions about wild flora identification.
