Drs. Digant and Anagha Amte received the prestigious Dr. K.V. Desikan Memorial Award in 2026 for their impactful efforts in Gadchiroli. Their work has led to a near-zero incidence of cerebral malaria among the region's tribal populations. The couple manages the Lok Biradari hospital, continuing the legacy of health service to tribal communities established in 1973. They initiated a Community Health Programme in 2015, setting up six health centers across 26 villages.
This program has been instrumental in bringing healthcare closer to the doorstep of tribal families. By training community health workers, they ensure timely diagnosis and treatment of malaria and other ailments, even in remote areas. Their proactive strategy resulted in zero cerebral malaria deaths in 2023 and 2024. Dr. Suwash Baral was also recognized for his work in leprosy diagnosis and health system strengthening in Nepal, significantly reducing diagnostic delays.
The awards were presented during the LEPRA Society's 37th Foundation Day celebrations. Instituted in 2023, the Dr. K.V. Desikan Memorial Award acknowledges outstanding contributions in infectious diseases and community health.
