Hysterectomy Probe: Maharashtra Cites Sugarcane Workers
2 Mar
Summary
- Maharashtra formed committees to investigate hysterectomies in private hospitals.
- Focus is on sugarcane workers' health and alleged unnecessary surgeries.
- New state and district panels will review cases from the past three years.

The Maharashtra government has established new state and district-level committees to investigate hysterectomy surgeries conducted in private hospitals over the past three years. This initiative places a significant emphasis on the health concerns of women sugarcane workers, addressing allegations of unnecessary uterus removal procedures. The state panel, led by Neelam Gorhe, will include public health officials, gynaecology experts, and UNICEF representatives.
These committees are tasked with a thorough review, which includes examining technical aspects of cases, verifying medical records, and interviewing women who have undergone these surgeries. Their mandate is to identify any instances of unnecessary procedures and propose preventive measures. The district committees, chaired by collectors, will gather local information and report to the state committee.
This move follows a similar investigation initiated in June 2019. The government resolution dated February 25, 2026, mandates that both state and district committees convene at least twice annually to submit comprehensive reports. The overarching goal is to enhance oversight of private healthcare facilities and safeguard women from potentially harmful, unrequired surgeries.
