25 May
Summary

- The transformation includes academic programs for healthcare professionals.
- This aims to improve treatment quality and expand mental healthcare access.

Maharashtra's regional mental health hospitals in Pune, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Nagpur are undergoing a significant transformation into academic centers. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated this initiative goes beyond infrastructure, focusing on improving access to modern, quality mental healthcare for underserved populations.
These hospitals, collectively housing around 5,700 beds, will integrate academic programs to enhance treatment quality and promote research. This strategic move aligns with national efforts to strengthen mental health specialities and create a larger pool of trained professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurses.
Academic programs, including MD psychiatry and MPhil in clinical psychology, were approved in 2019. The MD psychiatry program is already running at Nagpur's facility since the 2022-23 academic year. Diploma courses in psychiatric nursing have also commenced in Thane and Pune since 2022-23, admitting 20 students annually.
