Maharashtra Mandates Anomaly Scans for High-Risk Pregnancies
24 Feb
Summary
- High-risk pregnancies now require mandatory anomaly scans at 18-20 weeks.
- The rule aims to reduce infant deaths from congenital anomalies.
- Scans identify fetal abnormalities for early treatment or termination.

The Maharashtra government has implemented a new mandate requiring high-risk pregnant women to undergo an anomaly scan between 18 and 20 weeks of gestation. This crucial step, detailed in a government resolution on February 17, aims to significantly reduce infant mortality attributed to congenital anomalies.
This specialized ultrasound detects structural and genetic abnormalities early. Identifying potential birth defects allows for prompt medical intervention or, when necessary, legal termination of pregnancy. The directive covers all high-risk and eligible pregnant women, as defined by specific medical indicators.
While government facilities will provide these scans free of charge to high-risk women, those opting for private hospitals will incur costs. The state government's health department has initiated this measure following an analysis of child mortality data, which consistently shows congenital anomalies as a leading cause of death.
District health officers and civil surgeons are tasked with overseeing the implementation across both public and private healthcare settings. Professional medical bodies like the IMA and FOGSI are supporting the awareness campaign to ensure compliance with the new regulation.
