Maharashtra Steps Up: Vaccination Drive Against JE Intensifies
15 Apr
Summary
- Maharashtra accelerates vaccination and awareness for Japanese encephalitis.
- Vidarbha districts are most vulnerable due to proximity to carriers.
- State aims for comprehensive control with vaccination and mosquito control.

Maharashtra is on high alert for Japanese encephalitis, bolstering its vaccination drive and preventive measures. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis underscored the government's priority on public health and the need for unified action to combat this serious viral infection. While vaccination began in other states in 2015-16, Maharashtra initiated its program later after addressing the issue with the central government, successfully reducing cases significantly.
Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito-borne disease affecting the brain, with potential for severe complications and fatalities. Official data indicates a low number of cases in Maharashtra between 2021 and March 2026, with sporadic occurrences mainly in Vidarbha's Nagpur, Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli districts. These areas are prone to mosquito breeding and are near known animal carriers.
The state achieved substantial vaccination coverage between April 2025 and February 2026, with 89.26% receiving the first dose and 78.68% the second. However, uptake varies by district. To ensure diagnosis and treatment, five sentinel centers and 16 pediatric intensive care units are operational. Control measures include regular vaccination, fogging, surveillance, and sanitation drives, with citizens urged to ensure vaccination and take mosquito bite precautions.
