Pune Gets New Virology Institute to Boost Health Security
13 Feb
Summary
- Maharashtra's new institute aims to strengthen diagnostic and research capacity.
- The institute will feature advanced biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) laboratories.
- A budget of ₹60 crore has been allocated for the project's setup.

The state health department will commence construction on the Maharashtra Institute of Virology (MIV) in Pune next month. This initiative is designed to enhance Maharashtra's diagnostic and research infrastructure, thereby decreasing dependence on the National Institute of Virology (NIV) during future viral outbreaks.
Health Minister Prakash Abitkar confirmed that the project, granted administrative approval of ₹60 crore, will establish advanced biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) laboratories. These facilities are crucial for diagnosing, monitoring, and researching infectious diseases effectively.
The allocated budget includes substantial funds for sophisticated laboratory equipment like PCR systems and DNA sequencers, alongside the development of BSL-3 infrastructure featuring specialized HVAC and filtration systems.
This new institute, to be situated within an existing public health department laboratory building, will significantly bolster Maharashtra's preparedness for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and promote vital research.
