10 Lakh Suffer Hypertension in Maharashtra
15 Mar
Summary
- Nearly 10 lakh people diagnosed with hypertension in Maharashtra.
- Over 2.9 lakh individuals found to have diabetes in recent screening.
- Two in every five people screened had hypertension, survey reveals.

A large-scale health survey conducted in Maharashtra during February revealed a significant prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Across the state, approximately 25.8 lakh individuals were screened for high blood pressure, with 10.05 lakh diagnoses of hypertension. This means two out of every five people examined had high blood pressure.
Concurrently, over 12.5 lakh people were screened for diabetes, resulting in 2.88 lakh new diagnoses. The data suggests that one in every four individuals screened had diabetes. These screenings were part of a special campaign targeting low-income groups in both urban and rural areas.
Health officials noted that many diagnosed individuals were previously unaware of their conditions. Experts attribute the rise in these lifestyle disorders to rapid urbanization, sedentary habits, poor dietary choices, and environmental factors. The campaign, which ran from February 1 to 28, has initiated treatment for those diagnosed, emphasizing the importance of early detection and prevention.
