9 Mar
Summary
- Maharashtra's HPV vaccination drive aims to protect nearly 10 lakh girls.
- The campaign targets girls aged 14 to 15 years to prevent cervical cancer.
- Vaccination is expected to be completed within three months.

Maharashtra initiated a significant statewide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive on March 8, coinciding with International Women's Day. This campaign aims to inoculate 9,84,414 girls between the ages of 14 and 15 years. The primary objective is to prevent cervical cancer, a critical public health concern.
The initiative is set to be completed within a three-month period, after which it will be integrated into Maharashtra's routine immunization program. The state government has procured 9,47,380 doses of Gardasil 4, a quadrivalent HPV vaccine effective against the most common and dangerous strains of the virus.
This statewide effort mirrors the Central government's nationwide HPV vaccination initiative, which commenced on February 28, 2026. Public health officials emphasized the importance of reaching nearly 10 lakh girls and assured that there is no shortage of vaccines. They also highlighted the need to combat misinformation regarding the HPV vaccine and encouraged accurate information dissemination.
Health workers across Maharashtra have received training to administer the vaccine, and cancer screening services will be enhanced concurrently. The campaign underscores a commitment to women's health, recognizing it as a societal responsibility. Strengthening healthcare services, particularly in rural areas, remains a key focus.
