Maharashtra Fights HPV Vaccine Myths
20 Mar
Summary
- Less than 1% of 9.84 lakh girls vaccinated for HPV.
- Misinformation about infertility is causing hesitancy.
- Officials intensifying IEC activities and community outreach.

Maharashtra's Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination initiative, targeting girls between 14 and 15 years old, has commenced with low initial uptake. As of March 18, approximately 8,828 girls were vaccinated, representing less than 1% of the nearly 9.84 lakh target population. The slow start, beginning on March 8, is attributed by health officials to significant social stigma surrounding female health and widespread misinformation circulating on social media platforms.
Concerns have been raised about false claims, including the vaccine causing infertility, leading to parental hesitancy and refusal of consent. Officials are issuing notices and taking strict action against those spreading such content. To counteract these myths, intensified Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities have been rolled out across all districts. This includes involving religious and community leaders, circulating videos featuring dignitaries, and empowering ASHA workers to engage with parents directly to encourage voluntary participation in the vaccination drive.
