Maharashtra Hospitals Get Life-Saving Bleeding Tech
2 Mar
Summary
- Balloon tamponade inserted into uterus to stop severe bleeding.
- Procedure is life-saving when medicines fail to control hemorrhage.
- 5,000 devices distributed to government hospitals statewide.

The Maharashtra government has implemented the use of balloon tamponade in all state-run hospitals to significantly reduce maternal deaths, particularly those caused by severe bleeding. This medical procedure involves inserting and inflating a sterile balloon within the uterus to apply pressure and effectively stop hemorrhage when other methods fail.
The decision to adopt this life-saving technique was made in September 2025, with 5,000 devices procured and distributed to district, sub-district, and rural hospitals across all 36 districts by January-February 2026. Healthcare professionals have been trained in its use, recognizing it as a globally accepted method for controlling postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).
Postpartum hemorrhage, defined as excessive bleeding after childbirth, is identified as the primary driver of maternal mortality in India. Data from April to December 2025 revealed 111 maternal deaths attributed to PPH and antepartum hemorrhage in the state, highlighting the critical need for such interventions. Further training initiatives are planned to ensure widespread competency.
