Maharashtra is experiencing severe heat conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in multiple locations. Data from March 1 to April 12 shows 15 reported cases of heatstroke across the state, with no fatalities.
Pune has seen a significant number of heat-related illnesses, treating over 600 patients in March for ailments like cramps and dehydration. Civic hospitals reported a variety of heat-related conditions, highlighting the impact of the rising temperatures.
Health experts attribute the current trend to clear skies, dry winds, and a lack of rain. They forecast temperatures to climb to 41-42 degrees Celsius, warning of hot evenings and increased nighttime temperatures, which prolong thermal stress.
Residents are advised to avoid sun exposure between 11 am and 4 pm, wear light clothing, stay hydrated, and use sun protection. Vulnerable populations, including expectant mothers, should remain in cooler environments and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
During the same period, 89 cardiovascular disease deaths were registered, while no heatstroke deaths were reported. Experts emphasize the need for cities to publicly report daily health data to better understand and address the impact of heatwaves on public health.
