Maharashtra Health Scheme: PHCs to Cover Transplants

The Maharashtra government is significantly expanding the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) by empanelling 2,767 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs). This initiative, expected to be completed within two weeks, will bring the total number of empanelled facilities to 5,248, allowing beneficiaries to receive treatment nearer to their residences.
A key enhancement is the operationalisation of a special corpus fund designed to cover high-cost medical procedures. This fund will support treatments such as heart, liver, and bone marrow transplants. Previously, the state government revamped MJPJAY in 2023, extending coverage to ₹5 lakh per family and increasing the number of covered procedures to 2,399.
To improve transparency and efficiency, the entire scheme is transitioning to an advanced Transaction Management System (TMS) portal. Trials have begun, with over 2,500 hospitals expected to join the platform by February 9. The corpus fund mechanism involves retaining 20% of claims as reserve funds, with the remaining 80% paid to hospitals upon approval by a special committee.
Dayanand Jagtap, deputy CEO of the State Health Assurance Society, confirmed the corpus fund's imminent operationalisation. The government has allocated over ₹15 crore to this fund. Dr. Omprakash Shete, head of the Ayushman Bharat Mission Maharashtra committee, noted that the final review meeting for the rollout is scheduled for February 11.
