Milk Purity Tracked Digitally in Maharashtra
10 Oct
Summary
- A digital system will trace milk from animal to consumer.
- Inspections of milk collection centers are underway.
- The FDA is also enhancing pharmaceutical safety standards.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is set to implement a digital traceability system for milk within the next six months to a year. This innovative approach will allow authorities to track milk from dairies and collection centers all the way back to the individual animal, identified by ear tags. The goal is to combat milk adulteration and enhance overall food safety across the state.
This digital push is part of broader efforts by the FDA, which has already begun inspecting milk collection centers statewide. These inspections focus on identifying and rectifying issues related to adulteration, unsafe milk, and adherence to collection and hygiene protocols. The FDA is also actively working to improve safety standards within the pharmaceutical sector, including pharmacies and manufacturing units.
Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe emphasized that food safety requires a public movement, involving consumers, businesses, and government agencies. He highlighted that practices are gradually spreading across various food businesses. The initiative also aims to support the 'Eat Right School' campaign, promoting nutritious eating habits among children.
