Maharashtra Bans Junk Food Around Schools
29 Jul
Summary
- Junk food sales banned within 50 meters of Maharashtra schools.
- School canteens now require valid FSSAI licenses.
- Violators face license suspension, fines, and legal action.

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has implemented a statewide ban on junk food sales, free distribution, and advertising within a 50-meter radius of schools. This significant measure, affecting nearly 1.08 lakh schools and two crore students, aims to promote healthier eating habits among children. Foods high in fat, sugar, and salt, such as samosas, chips, and sugary drinks, are now prohibited.
This new order mandates that all school canteens, Mid-Day Meal kitchens, and food suppliers must secure a valid FSSAI license and registration. Schools are also tasked with implementing food safety display boards and appointing food safety supervisors. The FDA plans to conduct inspection drives, with non-compliant schools facing potential license suspension or cancellation, food seizures, and legal repercussions.
The initiative is part of the state's "Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra" campaign and aligns with the FSSAI's "Safe Food and Balanced Diets for Children in School Regulations, 2020." Authorities aim to reduce lifestyle-related illnesses and foster a culture of healthy eating from a young age.
