Homoeopaths Gain Right to Prescribe Allopathy in Maharashtra

As of August 5, 2026, Maharashtra has become the first state in India to conditionally register homoeopaths, enabling them to prescribe allopathic medicines, especially in remote and rural areas. This historic decision saw Dr. Neha Siddharth Pawar registered by the Maharashtra Medical Council on the evening of August 5, 2026, marking a significant moment for homoeopathic practitioners.

However, this development has been met with strong resistance from the allopathic medical community. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) announced a 24-hour suspension of services in state government hospitals, starting midnight on August 5, 2026. They have threatened an indefinite strike from 6 am on August 6, 2026, if their demands are not met.

Protesting allopathic doctors are seeking an immediate halt to the registration process pending the establishment of a proper legal and regulatory framework. They also want representation on the committee drafting the Standard Operating Procedure for this registration. The Indian Medical Association and other resident doctors' associations have joined the protest, emphasizing their fight to safeguard medical education standards and patient safety.

The IMA is attempting to stall registrations until a court verdict expected on August 13, 2026.
