She has been candid about her health battle, which began with severe stomach issues leading to a colon cancer diagnosis in December 2023.
Initially, a lemon-sized tumor was removed, but the cancer later spread to her lungs. Schilling underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy while filming, finding it a challenging experience. She recalled moments of vomiting and tears after leaving set, noting how the illness impacted her energy and appearance, which was difficult for her and her husband, Gareth. Despite this, she found wonderful support from the MAFS team during filming.
Mel Schilling had been hopeful about a groundbreaking clinical trial scheduled for March 2026. However, over Christmas, she experienced severe headaches and numbness, indicating the cancer had spread to her brain. Despite radiotherapy, her oncology team delivered the terminal news.
