Madurai Battles Dengue Surge Amidst Monsoon
28 Oct
Summary
- Madurai's government hospitals see daily dengue and viral fever cases.
- 38 dengue cases this month, a rise from last year, placing city on alert.
- Preventive measures include DBC workers and mobile medical units.
As the northeast monsoon arrives, Madurai is facing an increase in dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases. Government hospitals in the city are reporting an average of three dengue cases and ten viral fever cases each day. At Government Rajaji Hospital, seven patients are currently receiving treatment for dengue in a dedicated ward.
Madurai Corporation has registered 38 dengue cases this month, a significant rise from the 20 cases reported in October of the previous year. While not yet an outbreak, the increasing numbers have placed the corporation on high alert and led to intensified preventive actions against vector-borne and water-borne diseases.
To combat these illnesses, approximately 1,200 dengue-breeding check workers have been deployed across the city. Specialized mobile medical units are also operating daily, providing targeted healthcare in vulnerable areas, in addition to morning medical camps conducted by Urban Primary Health Centres. Residents are urged to maintain cleanliness and seek medical attention if they exhibit symptoms like persistent fever.
