Madonna Overcomes Sepsis After Harrowing 4-Day Coma

In June 2023, global superstar Madonna was hospitalized with a severe bacterial infection that nearly cost her life. The 67-year-old singer revealed that she fell into a 4-day coma and contracted sepsis, a potentially fatal condition where the body's infection-fighting processes turn on itself, during the ordeal.

Madonna, who had been rehearsing for her tour, said she went from being "alive and dancing around" one minute to being in the ICU the next. After being taken off the ventilator and starting to breathe on her own, she was diagnosed with sepsis, which can lead to organ damage and death if not treated promptly.

The "Like a Prayer" hitmaker, who once saw herself as "superwoman," admitted she had "no strength" and "no energy" during her lengthy recovery, and didn't know when it would end. However, she credits her Kabbalah teacher's message of "radical acceptance" for helping her overcome the trauma.

A year after her miraculous recovery, Madonna celebrated the Fourth of July, reflecting on how far she had come. She is now launching a new Kabbalah course with her teacher, acknowledging that she has learned to embrace her uniqueness and not fitting in as what "saves you."
