Massachusetts has reported more than 100 cases of cyclospora infections during the summer of 2026. Some of these illnesses are suspected to be linked to contaminated lettuce products. The stomach parasite can cause severe symptoms, including "explosive" diarrhea. While Massachusetts is experiencing an increase compared to typical seasons, the state Department of Public Health (DPH) states that case numbers remain within historical ranges.
The DPH indicated there is no evidence of large outbreaks within the state. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has noted that some recalled Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce was distributed to food service locations in Massachusetts. Investigators have identified small clusters of cases with apparent connections to this lettuce.
Cyclosporiasis symptoms typically appear about a week after consuming contaminated food. Common signs include persistent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises thorough washing of all fruits and vegetables and maintaining good hand hygiene to prevent infection.
