23 Jan
Summary
- Raja Sivagurunathan regained mobility after a bilateral lung transplant.
- Apollo Hospitals Chennai has performed over 600 heart and lung transplants.
- India faces a severe transplant gap, with huge unmet demand annually.

Raja Sivagurunathan, 59, is now back on his feet and walking freely, a remarkable recovery following a bilateral lung transplant. Months prior, he could barely walk 10 steps without breathlessness. His successful procedure at Apollo Hospitals Chennai marks a significant milestone.
The hospital's extensive heart and lung transplant program has reached over 600 such procedures. It also manages over 2,000 transplant patients and has handled more than 1,000 ECMO cases.
This program is set for a national expansion, adopting a hub-and-spoke model across its network. This initiative aims to address the immense need for transplants in India, where thousands of heart and lung transplants are required yearly, but only a fraction are performed.
