Lung Cancer Drug Shows Major Survival Benefit
25 Oct
Summary
- Sacituzumab tirumotecan combined with pembrolizumab significantly improved progression-free survival.
- The combination therapy demonstrated a trend toward improved overall survival in patients.
- The study showed a favorable safety profile with fewer adverse events compared to chemotherapy.
The Phase III OptiTROP-Lung06 study, presented at the 2026 European Society for Medical Oncology Congress, highlights significant advancements in treating advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Results demonstrated that sacituzumab tirumotecan, in combination with pembrolizumab, substantially improved progression-free survival by 51% compared to standard chemotherapy plus pembrolizumab.
This innovative combination therapy also showed a favorable trend towards improved overall survival. The study, involving 455 patients, met its primary endpoint for progression-free survival, offering new hope for first-line treatment of specific lung cancer patients. The findings were simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Regarding safety, the sacituzumab tirumotecan and pembrolizumab combination exhibited a profile consistent with individual agents, showing fewer severe adverse events than chemotherapy. This suggests a potentially more tolerable treatment option for patients with advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer, particularly those with PD-L1 tumor proportion score below 1%.
Sacituzumab tirumotecan, developed by Sichuan Kelun-Biotech, is a novel TROP2 antibody-drug conjugate targeting various solid tumors. Its development aims to address unmet medical needs, with several indications already approved in China, including for breast and lung cancer.
