LSD Crisis: Cattle Die as Officials Act
3 Oct
Summary
- Veterinary team formed after TOI report on dying cattle.
- Seven of 23 cattle died at a temporary isolation centre.
- Operators advised against transporting infected animals.
A significant outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD) affecting cattle in Hisar has prompted action from the animal husbandry department. A six-member veterinary team was constituted to examine and treat affected animals after a recent report detailed the dire conditions at a temporary isolation center. This facility had housed 23 cattle, sadly with seven succumbing to the disease.
The veterinary team commenced their visits on Saturday, collecting samples for testing and committing to daily morning and evening check-ups for the next seven days. The department has issued critical advisement to the isolation center's operator, prohibiting the introduction of new infected animals to prevent disease propagation. Livestock owners are strongly urged to ensure unvaccinated animals receive vaccinations.
Preventative measures against disease spread are being emphasized. These include the use of mosquito nets and smoke-based control methods, particularly during dawn and dusk. Owners are also advised to keep cattle in dry environments and to immediately seek veterinary attention if disease symptoms appear. Transporting infected animals is strictly discouraged. The organizers of the isolation center have appealed for essential supplies like medicines, fodder, and materials for constructing additional shelter.
