Ludhiana Battles Rising Dengue, Malaria

As the monsoon season intensifies in Ludhiana, health officials and medical professionals are urging vigilance against a surge in seasonal illnesses. While the number of confirmed dengue cases stands at three and malaria cases at 21 for the year, doctors anticipate a significant rise in mosquito-borne infections as the rainy period continues. Hospitals are already observing an uptick in acute gastroenteritis, with some requiring hospitalization due to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.

Infectious disease specialists highlight that the period immediately following the monsoon onset is critical for the proliferation of diseases like malaria and dengue. Although dengue cases are currently low, with three confirmed and 2,294 suspected cases tested this year, health experts consider it the primary public health concern due to its outbreak potential and risk of severe complications. Changing weather patterns are contributing to infections appearing earlier and with greater severity.

Water-borne diseases such as typhoid, viral hepatitis, and acute gastroenteritis pose a significant threat, particularly in areas experiencing waterlogging and contamination of drinking water sources. Vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses, are at higher risk. Residents are advised to prevent water stagnation and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms manifest.
