Ludhiana Heatwave: Civil Hospital's Heatstroke Ward Lacks Basic Facilities

As Ludhiana grapples with a severe heatwave and temperatures climbing to nearly 44 degrees Celsius, significant concerns have arisen regarding the preparedness of the civil hospital's dedicated heatstroke ward. Reports indicate that several basic emergency facilities are lacking, despite the rising risk of heat-related illnesses. This situation prompts questions about the district health system's readiness, especially as the India Meteorological Department has issued heatwave alerts across Punjab.

An incident involving a 65-year-old woman with suspected heat stroke revealed the ward's deficiencies. Trainees and hospital sources allege that critical equipment such as an intubation trolley, oxygen support, and emergency medicines are not readily available within the heatstroke room. Furthermore, proper ventilation and cooling arrangements, including an air conditioner, are reportedly absent, with the ward functioning on temporary measures.

Health experts emphasize the vulnerability of the elderly, outdoor laborers, children, and those with pre-existing conditions during extreme heat. The union health ministry had previously directed states to establish well-equipped heat stroke management units ahead of the summer. Responding to the allegations, the senior medical officer stated that all necessary equipment is available within the emergency block and that air conditioning is being installed.
