Cases of dengue and malaria are increasing in Ludhiana district as of October 2026. Dengue infections rose from 55 last month to 58 this month, while malaria cases climbed from 71 to 82.
Health department teams are actively engaged in inspecting identified areas to detect and prevent mosquito breeding. These teams conduct specific checks for dengue on Mondays and Fridays, and for malaria on Tuesdays, while also focusing on public awareness.
Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, often breeding in stagnant water found in common household items. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites and spread by the Anopheles mosquito. Ludhiana primarily sees P. vivax malaria, known for recurring fevers, while P. falciparum, which can be life-threatening, is mainly found among migrant populations.
Residents are urged to take preventative actions to curb mosquito populations. This includes regular cleaning of water containers, preventing water stagnation around homes, keeping storage covered, and frequently changing cooler water. Protective measures like using mosquito repellents, nets, and wearing full-sleeved clothing are also recommended to prevent mosquito bites.
