Traditional food cultures, like that found in Lucknow, offer a vital alternative to ultra-processed foods contributing to global health issues. Professor R Clive Landis of the University of the West Indies highlighted that these traditional diets are inherently healthier than industrially manufactured products. Ultra-processed foods, engineered for overconsumption with high levels of sugar, fat, and salt, are linked to a rise in obesity and chronic diseases.
These food items often contain additives and preservatives not present in traditional meals. Their excessive consumption is associated with cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological disorders, and has even been linked to anxiety and depression. India's increasing burden of non-communicable diseases mirrors this global trend driven by lifestyle changes and increased intake of these processed goods. Professor Landis advocates for clear warning labels on ultra-processed foods, citing Brazil's success in enabling consumers to identify them easily.
Furthering academic collaboration, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Era University, the University of the West Indies, and the American University of Barbados. This agreement aims to foster joint research, medical education, and academic exchange programs.
