Lucknow Trauma Centre Critical: Understaffed, Under-Resourced
25 Feb
Summary
- Trauma centre lacks essential staff, including OT technicians and neurosurgeon.
- Critical equipment like C-arm machine and generator backup are missing.
- Patients are referred to distant hospitals due to severe resource shortages.

Lucknow's Jankipuram Trauma Centre faces a critical situation due to severe staff and resource shortages. Established in 2023 as a 20-bed facility for life-threatening injuries, it is significantly understaffed, with only three nurses against 15 sanctioned posts and no OT technicians. The absence of a neurosurgeon is a major concern for a trauma unit.
The centre also lacks essential medical equipment, including a C-arm machine crucial for surgical procedures, and relies on inverter power during outages as generator backup is unavailable. Fire extinguishers have expired, highlighting further safety concerns.
Unskilled employees are handling administrative tasks due to a lack of dedicated clerical staff. The emergency medical officer is managing both trauma cases and the outpatient department, which sees up to 400 patients daily in summer.
As a result, accident victims near the Jankipuram extension can only receive basic first aid at this centre before being transported to hospitals like KGMU or RMLIMS, located 10-12 km away. Proposals for additional manpower and resources have been submitted.
