Lucknow Snakebites Surge: Hospitals Brace for More

Lucknow has reported a significant increase in snakebite cases following the commencement of the monsoon season. Snakes displaced from their flooded burrows are increasingly entering residential areas, leading to a sharp rise in emergency admissions.

Government hospitals, including RMLIMS and Civil Hospital, have treated dozens of snakebite victims in June and July. Data from health centers across the district revealed 203 snakebite cases from January 1 to June 30, 2026, with a notable 42.36% increase in June alone.

The district health department has proactively ensured ample supplies of anti-snake venom (ASV) at all community and primary health centers. This preparedness measure aims to facilitate immediate treatment for snakebite victims during the high-risk monsoon period.

Medical experts strongly advise against delaying treatment with faith healing or traditional remedies. They stress that victims should remain calm, minimize limb movement, and seek immediate medical attention. Effective ASV administration is crucial for saving lives and preventing severe complications like paralysis or kidney failure, which can result from specific venomous snakebites.
