Government hospitals in Lucknow have reported a concerning surge in flu-like illnesses, with a 40-50% increase observed over the past month. Doctors note that symptoms such as persistent cough and weakness can last for up to three weeks after the fever has subsided. This rise in patient numbers is evident across major medical facilities in the city.
Daily fever cases have escalated from approximately 650-700 to nearly 1,000, leading to 60-80 new admissions each day. Specific hospitals like King George's Medical University (KGMU) have seen flu cases climb from about 100 to 150 daily. Balrampur Hospital reported a rise in fever OPD attendance from 200 to over 300 patients daily, with emergency admissions doubling from 10 to around 20.
Experts explain that airway irritation can cause prolonged cough after viral infections. While flu symptoms typically resolve within five to seven days, some patients face lingering cough and weakness for up to three weeks. Most cases are managed as outpatients, with limited need for oxygen support. Individuals with pre-existing health conditions are at higher risk of complications.
Medical professionals advise maintaining fluid intake and nutrition to combat weakness during recovery. They also caution that changes in taste are common during viral infections and do not necessarily indicate a separate illness. Prompt medical attention is recommended for increasing breathing difficulties. Antibiotics are not routinely needed for uncomplicated influenza, and their use should be based on a doctor's prescription.
To curb transmission, experts recommend avoiding crowded places, consistent handwashing, respiratory hygiene, and mask usage. Children with flu symptoms should stay home from school. Annual influenza vaccination is encouraged, especially for individuals at higher risk of severe illness, as vaccine formulations are updated to counter evolving influenza strains.
