Rain Sparks Disease Fears in Lucknow
26 Sep
Summary
- Continuous rainfall has heightened vector-borne disease risks.
- Intensified surveillance and preventive measures are underway.
- 255 dengue, 251 malaria, and 18 chikungunya cases reported.
Continuous rainfall in Lucknow over the past three days has led to waterlogging and increased concerns about vector-borne diseases, including dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Health officials have ramped up surveillance and preventive actions across all eight zones of the city.
Teams have been deployed to vulnerable areas to distribute medicines and raise public awareness. Each zone has dedicated malaria inspectors and their teams conducting house-to-house surveillance, identifying mosquito-breeding sites, and implementing source reduction measures. As of September 25, approximately 250 households were checked, and notices are being issued for premises where mosquito larvae are found.
Multiple medical mobile units have been in operation for weeks, providing consultations and medicines. The Chief Medical Officer has directed all urban and rural health centers to prepare and maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines. Government hospitals are on alert to manage potential increases in patients presenting with dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and other illnesses post-rainfall.
While the rain has potentially washed out some accumulated larvae and lowered temperatures, health officials note that the period after the rain stops will be crucial. Regular anti-larval spraying and fogging will be conducted in vulnerable areas. As of today, September 26, 2026, the city has reported 255 dengue cases, 251 malaria cases, and 18 chikungunya cases this year.
