Lucknow Blood Banks: Safety Lapses Spark Patient Risk Fears
31 Mar
Summary
- Multiple blood banks operate with critical safety lapses.
- Facilities lack mandatory testing equipment and qualified doctors.
- FSDA has suspended operations at seven blood centres across UP.

Concerns are mounting over the continued operation of several blood banks in Lucknow that exhibit critical safety deficiencies, even after multiple inspections. Approximately 60 blood banks are active in the city, with many charitable organizations flagged for lacking mandatory testing equipment and qualified doctors.
These non-compliant facilities are still collecting and supplying blood, putting patients at severe risk of infections. The FSDA has issued notices and is considering license cancellations and FIRs for persistent violations. Last year, eight individuals were jailed and three licenses canceled following similar issues.
In a recent enforcement drive, the FSDA suspended operations at seven charitable blood centres across Uttar Pradesh due to irregularities in documentation and blood handling. Inspections of 42 centres in districts like Meerut and Varanasi revealed these discrepancies, leading to the immediate halt of operations at the seven implicated facilities.
