Harvard Study: Deep Breathing Lowers BP
16 Mar
Summary
- Over 122 million US adults have hypertension, many unaware.
- Deep breathing exercises can lower systolic BP by up to 54 mmHg.
- Drug-free breathing techniques offer an alternative to medication.

A significant portion of the American adult population, over 122 million individuals, suffers from hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure. Many are unaware of their condition, which puts them at double or triple the risk for heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. This elevated pressure damages arteries and strains the heart over time.
However, a comprehensive review by Harvard University researchers has highlighted the efficacy of drug-free breathing exercises in managing blood pressure. These techniques, including 4-7-8 breathing and belly breathing, have been clinically shown to reduce systolic blood pressure by as much as 54 mmHg and diastolic pressure by up to 17 mmHg in studies. Experts recommend a daily 15-minute practice to stimulate the vagus nerve, promote relaxation, and widen blood vessels.
