Summary

- Neuro-inflammation and hormonal shifts are key biological triggers.
- Estrogen fluctuations can worsen headaches post-infection.

Persistent headaches are a significant lingering symptom of SARS-CoV-2 infection, commonly termed 'long Covid.' Medical experts observe that women experience these post-viral headaches approximately 1.5 to 2 times more often than men. This gender disparity is linked to several physiological and hormonal factors.
Internal triggers include neuro-inflammation affecting brain blood vessels and immune over-reactions causing vascular or nerve irritation. Sinus congestion and vestibular issues stemming from the infection also contribute to persistent head pain.
A critical factor identified is the hormonal connection, particularly concerning estrogen levels. Women's headaches can intensify due to hormonal fluctuations during their menstrual cycles, perimenopause, or menopause. Covid-19 inflammation may sensitize the trigeminal system, making dips in estrogen amplify headache severity.
