Summary
- Long Covid affects multiple body systems, causing diverse symptoms.
- NHS services for long Covid have diminished, leaving patients unsupported.
- Doctors express helplessness due to lack of understanding and treatments.

Long Covid, defined as symptoms persisting beyond twelve weeks post-infection, is a complex, multi-system condition impacting individuals differently. Symptoms can range from fatigue and joint pain to cognitive issues and respiratory problems, affecting mental health and overall well-being. The lack of investment in understanding and managing long Covid means doctors often feel helpless when treating patients.
Previously, a dedicated long Covid service was available at most hospitals, often managed by respiratory teams. However, these services have reportedly disappeared. Dr. Amir Khan explained that due to the wide-ranging effects of long Covid on the brain, lungs, joints, and more, a single group of specialists cannot oversee patient care, necessitating referrals to multiple departments.
This fragmentation of care leaves patients in a difficult situation, with limited treatment options beyond pain relief and a lack of specific medications to reverse symptoms. Dr. Khan expressed that he feels 'really helpless' when consulting with patients who have lost their independence and earning capacity. The condition also affects children, presenting a significant problem for which adequate support structures are not in place.
