Summary
- Mobile blood donor centre launched in London for sickle cell patients.
- Urgent need for black heritage donors with Ro blood sub-type.
- Sickle cell is the UK's fastest-growing inherited blood disorder.
A new mobile blood donor centre has been introduced in London, aiming to meet the growing demand for blood donations from individuals with black heritage to support sickle cell patients.
The bloodmobile, officially launched recently, will travel to various London locations over the next twelve months. This initiative is crucial as sickle cell disease, the UK's fastest-growing inherited blood disorder, affects over 19,000 people, with a substantial portion receiving treatment in London.
NHS Blood and Transport (NHSBT) highlighted that over half of black heritage blood donors possess the Ro blood sub-type, essential for sickle cell patients requiring frequent transfusions. Currently, NHSBT can only supply half the blood needed, necessitating an increase in regular donors from black communities.
One donor, Henry, used the new bloodmobile to honor his late brother, emphasizing the life-saving impact of blood donations during difficult times. Long-time donor Brenda Smith also expressed her hope for increased participation from black communities, noting the ease and profound impact of donating blood.
