Measles Outbreak: London Schools Lock Doors on Vax Teams
20 Feb
Summary
- Over 50 measles cases reported in Enfield schools this week.
- Schools were warned two years ago about refusing vaccination teams.
- Vaccination rates in some London areas are significantly below target.

As of February 20, 2026, over 50 suspected measles cases have been reported in Enfield, north London, across seven schools and a nursery. This outbreak highlights a concerning trend, as it's revealed the government was warned two years prior that schools in a neighboring area were refusing access to NHS vaccination teams. A 2023 study found 32 out of 450 schools in northeast London did not allow these teams entry, with some also failing to share crucial information on children due for vaccination.
Current vaccination uptake in areas like Haringey (65%) and Hackney (58.3%) falls drastically short of the 95% target for herd immunity. This leaves a significant portion of children vulnerable, as noted by researchers who stated that nearly one in three children in Hackney lack protection. Experts warn that the situation in Enfield could easily spread, similar to previous outbreaks in 2024 and 2025.
The Department for Education was alerted to school refusals in 2024, with researchers calling for policy changes to mandate school access for vaccination teams. While a response was received from the then-education minister, the extent of policy changes remains unclear. Reasons for school refusal vary, including concerns about disruption, capacity, and sometimes a simple unwillingness to cooperate, particularly noted in some independent faith schools.
Broader issues linked to austerity have also impacted vaccination coverage, with cuts to health visitor numbers and Sure Start centers increasing the burden on primary care. Enfield Council has warned that unvaccinated pupils identified as close contacts may face 21-day school exclusions. Experts suggest a balance is needed between infection control and education, acknowledging the potential long-term damage of school closures, while also stressing the significant risk unvaccinated children face from circulating measles.
