Care Home's Shocking Neglect Revealed, Now Improved
28 Aug
Summary
- Residents were left without adequate food and hygiene services.
- A care home initially rated 'Inadequate' has now achieved a 'Good' rating.
- Concerns persist regarding the safe management of medicines and treatments.

Christopher Grange Residential Care in Liverpool has seen a significant turnaround after facing severe criticism and being placed in special measures. Initially rated Inadequate in March due to issues like delayed personal care and lack of resident dignity, a subsequent inspection in July revealed substantial improvements. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) now rates the home as Good, citing strong leadership as the driver of this positive change.
During the previous assessment, inspectors found concerning practices, including residents being left for long periods without food or drink, with one stating they were "starving." Some individuals received as few as one shower per month, and one resident endured over two years of pain due to overgrown toenails, without receiving necessary chiropody treatment. Breaches in safe care, staffing, person-centred care, nutrition, hydration, safeguarding, and governance were identified.
While most regulatory breaches have been addressed, the CQC noted that issues related to the safe management of medicines and treatments remain a concern. The home, which can accommodate up to 78 residents, including those with dementia, had 45 residents at the time of the latest assessment.
