A concerning listeria outbreak, traced to a Maryland cheese producer, has led to significant recalls and health alerts. La Ceiba Foods Latin Market Inc. has initiated a recall for its Requesón Salvadoreño and Requesón Mexicano products, marketed as La Colonia and Selectos Latinos.
These cheeses were distributed to markets and restaurants across Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The recall was prompted after Clover Hill Dairy, the supplier, alerted La Ceiba Foods to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
As of June 30, 2026, the outbreak has sadly resulted in one death and 12 hospitalizations. The FDA's investigation, sparked by illnesses in May 2026, confirmed the Listeria strain in the cheese matched those found in infected individuals across Maryland, New York, and Virginia.
Clover Hill Dairy's operating license has been suspended by the Maryland Department of Health. The FDA's investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of further recalls as more products may be identified. Consumers are advised not to consume, sell, or serve the recalled items and to seek a refund.
