- The donor, 24, anonymously saved the life of a 53-year-old.
- Young donors are crucial for saving lives through stem cells.

Stephen Cutts, 53, experienced an emotional reunion with the anonymous stem cell donor who saved his life. Cutts believed he was attending his wedding anniversary party, but his wife had secretly invited Kevin McNicholl, 24, the donor. The meeting, filled with tears, marked the first time Cutts could personally thank McNicholl.
Cutts was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in April 2023 and underwent chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. He described McNicholl as the nicest person he has ever met, deeply moved by his selfless donation. McNicholl, a software engineer from Belfast, had signed up for the donor register at 17 and was only 21 when he learned he was a match.
McNicholl expressed that it was an incredible feeling to meet Stephen, recognizing him as one of the strongest people he has encountered. He encouraged more young individuals to join stem cell registers, highlighting the potential to save lives. Anthony Nolan, a stem cell charity, emphasized that people under 30 are vital for donations, as they represent a significant portion of transplants but a smaller percentage of the donor register.
