New analysis from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicates stark differences in mortality rates between LGB+ individuals and heterosexual people in England and Wales.
The first official figures of their kind, based on the 2021 census, show LGB+ people have a 1.3 times higher risk of death from any cause. Suicide emerges as the second leading cause of death for LGB+ individuals, particularly affecting younger demographics.
Further findings highlight a 2.8 times higher risk of death from drug poisoning and a 1.8 times higher risk from alcohol-related causes among the LGB+ population compared to their heterosexual peers.
