Leicestershire surgery unit plans scrapped
19 Feb
Summary
- Plans for a £10m same-day surgery unit in Leicestershire have been cancelled.
- Rising costs and lack of activity made the project unviable.
- A new proposal for the site is expected by June 2026.

Plans for a new £10 million same-day surgery unit in Hinckley, Leicestershire, have been officially cancelled by the local Integrated Care Board (ICB). The proposed unit, which aimed to replace the 125-year-old Hinckley and District Hospital, was halted due to unforeseen cost increases and a lack of sufficient patient activity to ensure affordability.
Originally approved last year, the project faced an additional £2 million in construction costs. ICB officials cited a dual issue of insufficient funding for the building and a lack of patient volume to justify the expenditure. This decision follows a seven to eight-year development period, acknowledging lessons learned in project planning.
